Cancer Bats

On November 23, 2009, Cancer Bats brought their uncompromising blend of hardcore, punk and metal to Velodrom in Berlin. The Canadian band delivered pressure, speed and raw energy that still felt immediate on a large stage.

This gallery captures a night driven by crushing riffs, shouted choruses and the band's intense presence. Cancer Bats never came across as distant festival performers. They had the kind of chemistry that can make any venue feel like a packed, sweaty club.

About the band Cancer Bats

Formed in Toronto, Canada in 2004, Cancer Bats became one of the most distinctive bands operating between hardcore punk, sludge metal, Southern rock and classic heavy metal. Their sound combines huge guitar tones, heavy grooves and the unmistakably rough vocal delivery of frontman Liam Cormier, without losing sight of memorable hooks.

Early records such as Birthing the Giant from 2006 and Hail Destroyer from 2008 established the band far beyond the Canadian scene. Tracks including Lucifer's Rocking Chair, Hail Destroyer and Deathsmarch show why Cancer Bats connect with both hardcore crowds and metal audiences. From a concert photographer's perspective, their physical stage presence, constant movement and direct relationship with the crowd are what make them especially compelling live.
